As I'm sure you noticed, Mario moves around like a kung fu champion, and Princess Zelda looks like "Street Fighter II"'s Chun Li if she starred in an '80s rock opera. Of course, I'm aware that they could simply have altered Ness to be more fighting game friendly, as I noticed they had also done with other favorite characters. What's the point of having psychic powers if you shout out exactly what you're going to do before you do it anyway?! He also seems to be much more crammed into a sort of "cute kid" stereotype rather than the "average adolescent who just happens to have psychic powers" thing he had going for him in the original game. In Smash Brothers he shouts "PK!" and the name of his attack whenever he moves. In Earthbound, Ness only ever said things like "Yes/No" and "OK" (and at the end I always thought he was the voice that said "I miss ya"). This was a game that took all of the things you take for granted when playing an RPG game and flips them on their faces! Remember the part where to proceed you had to stand still and not touch anything for 3 minutes? And if you played too long, your dad would call you on your cell phone and tell you to take a rest! Earthbound can do no wrong.Īs for a new Earthbound game, are you sure we really want that? Think of what they did to Ness in Smash Brothers. The modern styling of the game was also a great addition, as I'm positively sick of the whole "Castles and dragons" thing. In fact, I think before Zelda 64, Earthbound was the only game to have "sound effect" background music. The music is always both uplifting and chilling to the bone. Earthbound is and always will be the pinnacle of Role-Playing Games.
